Is learning classical guitar technique a good foundation for jazz?!

Question: Is learning classical guitar technique a good foundation for jazz!?
I'm novice player!. i bought some jazz guitar instruction book!. i'm practicing arpeggio and just copying some chords without even knowing what notes i'm playing most of the time; i'm totally confused!. don't really where should i start!. i'm thinking of buying an instructional classical guitar book!. would that serve as the best path for learning some jazz!?

btw i used to play violin a little!. mostly played in one scale and the fingering are fixed; not like guitar which is all over the place!. violin was easier to memorise which note i'm pressing because there are rules on how to press notes!. like when you press your pinky, you're supposed to press your index, middle, annular finger!.

so i was thinking maybe first i should learn classical pieces to get myself acquainted with guitar as instrument!. do that for a year then maybe learn jazz theory or techniques!. any advice is welcome!. thanks!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

First, before you learn a style, (classical, jazz, blues, ect!.) you must learn the fundamentals!. I was in the same dilemma you were two years ago!. What I did was learn all my notes!. I memorized how to play every note and every scale!. Learn it so that if you want to play a high G, you can see where it would be written on the staff and know exactly where it is on the fingerboard!.
After I learned my notes!. I learned chords!. This takes time!. What worked best for me was to learn one chord a week!. (I would learn the major, minor, augmented, diminished, and 7th of the chord) Then on the next week, I'd review the previously learned chords, then proceed to learn new ones!.
Now, to the original question, 'learning classical before jazz'!. My opinion is that playing a classical style DEFINITELY helps in learning a jazz style!. All music has influences of Beethoven, Bach, Vivaldi, Tchaikovsky, ect!. If you get that embedded into the back of your mind, in my opinion, it will combine with how you hear music and how you feel music and it will ultimately help you create the unique sound that is YOU!. Remember, the basic fundamentals are EVERYTHING! Good luck on learning!Www@Enter-QA@Com

Yup!. Russ Freeman, the front-man for The Rippingtons, plays classical guitar in most of his works!. The guy is simply amazing -- give The Rippingtons a listen sometime!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

There is no right or wrong way!. Jazz is open to classical influence if you are!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Yes!. Every jazz musician worth mentioning, is capable of well executed classical style!. You must be a master of your instrument to play jazz!. I know thousands of "musicians" who called themselves "jazz musicians" but couln't play their instruments worth a damn!.

Since you already play the violin, have you considered playing jazz on that instrument!? If you want to play jazz on your violin, Listen to Stephane Grapelli, or Duke Ellington's Cootie Williams!. But in any case whatever instrument you want to play, please learn the instrument from a competent teacher, then listen to as many of the greats on that instrument as you can find!. Jazz is more of an attitude than technique!. Check out this website:
