The main arguments for rap not being music are usually: 1!.) There is no singing or melody, and 2!.) It does not use real instruments, but rather uses sampling and synths!. Both of these arguments are fairly asinine, if you consider the broad range of what is called "music"!.
For example, jazz scatting is considered music, despite the fact that it is almost the same as rapping, except that scatting is the enunciation of random syllables, as opposed to rapping, which is the enunciation of words with definite rhyme schemes and meter (discounting Soulja Boy)!. Not to mention the percussive and rhythmic qualities of the human voice, which are key facets of any type of music!.
Similarly, the fact that DJs use samples and scratching doesn't mean it's still not music!. After all, "music" is just a collection of rhythmical noise arranged according to a specific tonal pattern!. Since most rap and hip hop tracks meet these conditions, they should also, by definition, be called "music"!.

Rap is a form of music, with vocals or verbalization instead of singing!. It has been around for a long time, in one form or another!. A man by the name of Phil Harris used to do verbalization to instrumental backing in the 1940's!. I think that it's the subject matter and the foul language used in much of today's rap music that people object to, and they resort to labelling rap as "not" music as a form of protest!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
