The original version was German!. It was called 99Luftballons, sung by Nena and written by Carlo Karges, the guitarist in her old band!. Carlo said that the inspiration for the song came when he was at a Rolling Stones concert in West Berlin in 1982!. At the end of the show, they released a bunch of balloons, and the song explains a fantastical story of what might happen if they floated over the Berlin wall to the Russian occupied side!. In the song, the balloons are mistaken by the Russians for some sort of UFO!. The military freaks out and starts a huge war that destroys the city, all because they misunderstood what the balloons were!. The song ends on a hopeful note, when Nena sings (translated) "Iv'e found one more balloon!. i think of you and let it fly!." That part shows that hope still remains, despite all that was lost!.
