Telecasters are alot brighter and pretty good for "Twangy" sounds but i guess it really depends on your amp and stuff cause the clash used em and they sound fine!. I think most likely im gonna get one and put either fender noisless vintages in there or lace sensors!. Les pauls are really harmonic rich so if you like metal thats good to!. Theyre also really dark deep sounding!. Overall for quality theyre gonna be equal in the 400-600$ range the fenders will be made in mexico and the epiphones in korea or china or indonesia!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
there is a fundamental problem with this question!. There is no such thing as a epiphone Les Paul!.
The Les Paul is a gibson!.
As far as a telecaster vs a les paul that is a matter of personal taste,although I think the lyons share of guitar players would take the les paul over the Telecaster!. Now a strata caster, now that is a horse of a different colorWww@Enter-QA@Com

Hmm!.!. I'm not a fan of the Fender Telecaster!.!. But Epiphones are cheaper instruments than Fenders!.
An American made Fender Telecaster will run you about $1000, so if you want to stay within your price range, go with the Epiphone Les Paul!.
In general, Fenders have a better sound quality than Gibsons (Epiphones), and they are better built!. However, Gibson/Epiphone instruments are heavier, and have a "thicker" tone than Fenders!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I would go with the Epi!. I have an Epi and really like the sound!. The Telecaster does have a nice sound but unless your professional you don't need it!. I haven't heard the new Starcasters!. You may want to look at them!.
For $400 - $600 you may want to try Musicians Friend!. The have some decent sales from time to time!.

The Fender is better in this case!. If you other option was a Gibson Les Paul, then that would have been the one to go with!. However Fender makes better quality guitars than Epiphone!.

It's going to depend on your taste in music!. The Les Paul is going to have humbuckers which have more sustain and crunch!. The Fender has a cleaner sound!. I've got a Epi and it plays good, I've not been impressed by the Fenders that I have played, but that's my opinion!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
