I was loking through some of the sub-gebres of punk and I found "pop punk" does anyone aggree that the term pop punk is an oxymoron!? According to wikipedia "Punk rock (often referred to simply as punk) is an anti-establishment rock music genre " so by putting the term pop infrount of it makes it an oxymoron right!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

If you use the word "punk" to refer to the bands' supposed attitude(anti-everything)then I suppose yes,it can be considered an oxymoron(except if you go with anti-anti-everything which is of course stupid but meh)!.
If you use it as a musical term to describe simple song structures,three-chord music,aggression-music from bands like Crass,Gang Of Four,The Ramones,(early, mostly)The Clash, then it makes sense, since one assumes a friendlier-to-the-average-listener's-ear version of punk music,a 'pop' version of it!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

The term "punk" was also used for bands who began in the same era as those "anti-establishment" bands that dressed somewhat the same, acted the same, and most of all sounded the same!.!. not necessarily spreading the same message!.
Sex Pistols, The Clash, Dead Kenneys, Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Etc!.!. Broke ground for pissed off youth!.
The Boys, Johnny Thunders, RAMONES!.!. Sang more about drug use and high school romance<----influenced bands who are now labeled as "pop punk" which doesn't necessarily mean Blink 182!.!. But bands like the Briefs would also be classified as "pop-punk" or "power pop"!.
By the way!.!. Ramones were the very first band to be given the label "PUNK" by a music journalist in 1976 (correct the date if I'm wrong)!.!.!. And they were not so much a political band like the rest that played in that time!.
Plus, If you wore ripped up clothing, had messy hair and jumped around on stage while playing your guitar in 1977, you were looked as "punk" even if you sounded like Prince in "purple rain"!.!. haha!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

well i'd say that it simply means popular punk music!. even if it's not generalized as pop music and the artist did not intend for it to be, it may just depend on who listens to the music and how popular it becomes!.
but in a way i agree with you!. it does sort of seem like an oxymoron!. the more i tried to explain it, the more it seemed diverting!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
