Don't worry at least you asked !.!.!. believe it or not i know a few people who love to be ignorant to basic stuff like this!.!. it baffles me!.!.!.

any how

your measure or bar (usually the same thing) is broken up into 4 beats (hence 4 on the floor) most music is in 4/4 time except some spanish and certain reggae/ dancehall stuff

Generally rock, rnb, hip hop, techno, and drum n bass is 4/4 based!.!.!.!.

ok so u have 4 beats to a measure-

Heres your next step:

http://en!.wikipedia!.org/wiki/Whole_note

So your whole note would last 4 beats and your half note would last for 2 beats!.!.

Hint: your snare (backbeat) should generally sound on the 2nd beat and the 4th beat unless you are doing somethin funky/ freaky

Breakbeat and drum n bass and rock and hip hop can have additional snares but they still keep the core snare on the 2' and 4'

A whole note is a circle, no stem, and it's not filled in!. It receives four beats!.
A half note has a stem and is not filled in!. It receives two counts!. [Half the value of a whole note, hence the name half note!]

The line through the note doesn't dictate the rhythm, but the PITCH!. On the treble clef, there are five lines, E G B D F [going from bottom to top!.]
A good acronym to remember this by is Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge!. Now, a note can either be on one of these lines, or in one of the spaces!. The spaces, from top to bottom, go F A C E!. It's easy enough to remember because it spells "face!."

I hope I was able to help!!
If you have any other music questions, I'm sure your teacher will be more than willing to help!. And it makes a lot more sense having someone explain it to you in person ;]Www@Enter-QA@Com

the whole note has no stem (and gets 4 beats in a time signature where the quarter note gets the beat)

the half note has a stem (and gets 2 beats in a time signature where the quarter note gets the beat)Www@Enter-QA@Com

A whole note is the clear circle which holds four beats (in 4/4 time)
A half note holds two beats (in 4/4 time)Www@Enter-QA@Com

A half note (aka minum) has a stalk & a whole note (aka semibrieve) is just a circle!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
