just making beats good keyboard with lots of sounds like a motif or korg m3
and like you said a beat machine probally akai if you plan to record live instruments youll need a midi interface with a good program such as ableton or resons no fruity loops then lets say you want to record vocals of rappers or singer youll then need a mic then you should have a protools set up which could run from 1000 dollars to 100,000 dollars so it all depends on your budget but yeah a keyoard and a beat machine are the essentials!.
