Would you escape, knowing if you were caught, you'd spend the rest of your life behind bars. Or would you sit in your cell and hope they'd take some serious time off your sentence for extra good behavior?

depends on how much time remained on the existing sentence-term.
[this assumes that the "escape" try would result in "life-sentence" regardless of "initial" sentence]
I there was two days to go before release, I'd stay put.
if it was ""life without possibility of parole", I'd try to slip away and be a good boy and stay out of trouble .
in between, there might be some ethical choices to make
A duty to live by personal standards of right and wrong seems to exist in all of us.
Like all hypothetical questions, reality-behaviour would probably differ from stated intentions.
