Because the rep you're speaking to needs to have something done with your account or check on something--away from their desk/computer!. In order to do this, a customer would be put on hold!. I don't believe you're kept on hold for 'a long time' intentionally--9 times out of 10, there's a valid reason!.
And in regards to someone else's reply--in most call centres there are reprocussions for releasing a call before it was completed--there are only rare exceptions to this!. (cannot hear the caller/no caller there/caller being extremely rude)!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

maybe because it is a big company and the person that picked up your phone couldn't find the right person to entertain you!. So they wander around to search that person (who wasn't pick up the phone or not at their desk) and finally forgot about us huhuhuWww@Enter-QA@Com
