Why do they add "laughter sounds" in comedy shows on TV?!

Question:

Why do they add "laughter sounds" in comedy shows on TV?

Whenever there's anything even barely funny, you hear these laughters. If something is funny enough, don't the people watching in front of their TV know how to laugh?

Answers:

I was at a live taping once and the laughter is real...they have stage hands who hold up signs for an audience response...belive it or not they train you prior to the show so they get the right response for the situation whether it's "awwws" "laughter" or "oooooos".
Pretty cool I thought....you can usually go to a studio and get free tickets for a show if they are taping that day.
