How come Japan has such "wacky" gameshows?!
Question: I think it is because Japanese people are normally so controlled, subdued, quiet and polite that they enjoy certain extreme self-expression under controlled circumstances. Just like the way they love Karaoke, crazy game-shows are an opportunity to let their hair down, so to speak, in an acceptable context.

I don't watch them much but I occasionally watch Takeshi's Castle. The contestants seem to have a lot of fun getting bruised and bashed taking on the obstacle courses.
