Alma was raised in formal fashion and still uses correct manners of the day and time. Mr. Ellsworth is her second husband and she met him as Mr. Ellsworth. He was to be a marriage in pretty much name only, a marriage of convince. He was also an employee and adviser to her, again as Mr. Ellsworth. Many women at the time and some still, address their husband by there formal Sir name. For example many Dr's wives, political wives, and military wives address their husband by their title or formal Sir name. It is a show of respect.
My sisters husbands father is a Army Colonel and I have never heard him addressed as anything else, even in the home. To this day I couldn't tell you his first name. Just, The Colonel.
