How come regular commercials aren't as funny and witty as the ones in the Su!

Question: I love Super Bowl commercials because they are so entertaining and funny (however, this year was a little disappointing, but that's another story).

How come regular commercials aren't like that all year round? Usually they're stupid or boring.

Money is a big part of it. Each 30-second time slot costs a lot of money, so companies have to spend more money to make a good commercial so their time slot is money well-spent. It's a huge gamble to put a commercial during the Super Bowl b/c the company has to pay for the time slot PLUS the production of the commercial (includes market testing).

Other than spending money on the quality of the commercials, the Super Bowl brings a huge audience that cuts across all marketing groups. Ad agencies have to figure out a way to appeal to this broad audience... Usually that means making funny commercials because everyone wants to laugh. The well-known brands like Budweiser and Coca Cola have iconic trademarks (Clydesdale horses, Coke bottle) so they can market them however they feel like. So those commercials can be more dramatic and less funny (e.g. The dog helping the Clydesdale horse)

I guess the biggest question is why companies don't show Super Bowl ads after the game? Usually, they show the commercial once and then never again... Maybe the ad agencies don't want to dilute the message by showing it hundreds of times after the Super Bowl. Or there's some agreement with the director/producer/celebrity of the commercial to only show it once.

Because the company creating the commercial spends alot more time and money on the commercial because it's reaching such a massive audience and because they know some people watch the bowl mainly for the cool commercials and they want THEIR commercial to be remembered so you will buy their products. Marketing at it's American finest. :-)

yeah regular commercials are boring ... but i like the lizard's doing the thriller dance

Because everyone watches the Superbowl. So they want to make sure they have the best most memorable ad they can make. Because, really, this is the only time of the year people talk about commercials. In fact, some people watch the game just so they can watch the ads. Some news programs even highlight the best one. If you have a good ad during the Superbowl, people will remember it more than they would on any other day.

Because they don't want to pay a ton of money to have creative people develop creative ads when the normal ads aren't seen by as many people as the Superbowl ads, I guess.

1. There's a guaranteed audience.
2. A 30 second spot cost the advertisers $2.7million - for that kind of money, they put their thinking caps on.

I agree with this year's, they were kinda lame. I liked the Bridgestone ads, the Bud Light cavemen & the talking stain. Everything else was a waste of $2.7 million.

Because the Super Bowl is such a biggy deal! So they hire the BEST advertisers to make the commercials. All the commercials I see durin the year are awful, and I wonder who does that stuff??? I took graphic Design in College a long time ago and we Knew how 2 make good ones. Commercials were cool or funny when I was younger! I LOVE a FUNNY!!! U would love my commercials!!! What these advertisers don't seem 2 understand is if u make a sickening commerial, no one wants 2 buy it after that cause it makes u so irritated sometimes! But I quit designing commercials and ads. Love Sonshine!
