i think what you mean is candy, well taffy is stretched cooked sugar made into a candy it can have a chewy texture or hard.

It's what the Americans call candy...the name came from 'toffee'. It doesn't have to be toffee like nowadays and can be any flavour. I guess it's the texture that's important.
