A recent study found that 61% of regular daytime soap viewers couldn't (when asked) pinpoint their own home state on a map!. And a staggering 73% couldn't name the vice -president of the USA !. Unfortunate coincidence!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

I don't think that is a coincidence at all!. Somebody who is watching all that rubbish all the time would probably be unemployed, may be uneducated and of a lower socio-economic group which would prevent them from mixing in the wider world!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

You are not going to let this go are you!? I do not believe this to be true!. Maybe if they were studying people that were home due to lack of education!. Ya know, stay at home because they are high school drop outs that just didn't care or a careless 14 year old girl who got pregnant because she was thinking with hormones and not her brain!. The last year, in a sense I have come to know My Yahoo Answer friends and I will say that Most of them are capable of giving a comprehendable knowledgeable answer!. I know this is for sure, I watch soaps but I am anything but Dumb, this is condescending, patronizing and insulting to say the least!

Besides watching soaps since the mid-90s, I have been writing my own soap for nearly a decade now!. And I believe through watching soaps and writing my own, I have become more creative and have increased my critical thinking skills!.
Therefore, I do not believe this is true, necessarily!. But I can imagine that there are individuals who have developed into lazy, slow, and dim-witted people!.
I myself have no life!. So I tape the shows I like to watch while I'm at work and view them on the weekends!.

My feeling is that addiction to daytime dramas, like any other kind of addiction, can be unhealthy in many ways!.
However, as to the study you focus on, my feeling is that perhaps what is really going on is keeping attention on soap opera storylines to the point that there is inability to focus on anything else, including stuff going on in the real world!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Let me ask you something!? Do you watch TV!? I'm assuming that if you own one, you must watch it!. Do you feel that watching a program for an hour or so, after work, hinders your intelligence!? Or, how about spending time on the computer, asking silly questions, when you could be doing your job or spending time w/your family!? Do you feel that hinders your intelligence!?
For many of us, television provides a way to escape reality for just a little while!. And, believe it or not, many of us who watch daytime soap operas, usually record or DVR our soaps, so that we can watch it over the weekend, or when we're doing laundry, cooking in the kitchen so we can hear the show, or exercising on our treadmills!. It's called multi-tasking!.

It's making a widespread judgement w/o taking into account that we are all indviduals and just b/c one person is lazy/stupid and happened to watch soap operas doesn't mean that we are all dim wits, thank you very much!.
