Why did benjamin ask the clerk what year is this!?!? ben is a man that knows everything right!. so obviously he wanted to make sure he got the year right, was he time traveling!? did he somehow manage to control the time travel that desmond and faraday did!?!? how did he end up in the desert!? did he travel via the magic box that brought lockes father to the island!. remember what did faraday say when jack asked how much time does it take, faraday said time is irrelevent or something!? what was that dialouge about!. and it seems as if even the parachuters are unaware and afraid of the gun men who came onto the island!. and how the heck did they get there!? see !.!.!.I told you there would be more than one question!. lets see if you can answer them!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Answers:
Ben did time travel, and he didn't time travel!. At least, he didn't time travel in the conventional sense that a lot of people see time travel as being!. It would be better to understand it as traveling to a different timeline (almost in the way that they did in the show Sliders, only they're in the same existence)!.

To clarify this, think back to (I believe) the third episode back, "The Economist!." In the episode Daniel Faraday conducted an experiment in which he had one of his contacts on the freighter (Regina) launch a payload to a point on the Island specified by Daniel!. Daniel himself had a timer keeping track of how long it took for the payload to reach its target, and the payload carried a timer also measuring the time it takes to reach its target!. What was discovered was that there was a gap in time between the two timers!.

Both timers are correct!. The Island and the real world exist on two separate timelines, but share space!. The Island is still in 2004, the real world that the point the Island is on in this last episode, "The Shape of Things to Come" is in 2005!.

Therefore, Ben did technically time travel, but he himself had no control over what point in time he would arrive when he travelled back to the mainland!. While time is a factor in the Lost mythos, it is not a factor in the sense that a person can pick and choose what point in time he or she would want to go!.

To address your question about how Ben found himself in Tunisia, there seems to be some sort of portal from the Island to different points around the world!. The EP's Carlton and Damon alluded to it in the Lost Official Podcast, and the show even alluded to it on at least a couple occasions off the top of my head; The first was in (I believe) "The Man from Tallahassee" or the episodes surrounding that when Ben mentioned "the magic box," the second in the second episode of this fourth season "Confirmed Dead" in (C)harlotte (S)taples Lewis' brief flashback when she found the polar bear with the Dharma collar in the desert of Tunisia!. We have insufficient evidence from the show to come to a conclusion about this portal theory, but it's the most likely one from the information we have so far!.

As for the parachuters, I'm assuming you mean the four freighter folk who crash landed on the Island!. They're not necessarily scared, nor have they been intentionally left in the dark!. Remember in episode 5 "The Constant" we learned that someone (Kevin Johnson/Michael Dawson) sabotaged the communications equipment!. Had that not been done, they likely would have been informed about the offensive and would have been able to prepare to be extracted from the Island!. And, it's likely that's what they would have done had Bernard not been able to decipher the Morse code transmitted by the freighter!. As for Miles, he certainly didn't want to join his "buddies" not because he didn't know about theo ffensive, but he didn't want to encounter the smoke monster!.

The people leading the offensive, Kimi and the rest of the freighter assault team landed on the Island by helicopter!. Remember in either episode 6 or 7, Sayid made notice that the helicopter had left the freighter!. Frank Lapidus took the chopper along with Kimi and the rest of the freighter assault team to begin the offensive in their attempt to capture Ben!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

he asked the year because he was trying to make sure he wasn't having one of those time traveling moments like desmond!. i don't think we're supposed to know anything else, and no it def wasn't the magic box!. he said 'time is relative', remember how the times were different when he conducted his experiment!? not all of the boat people (parachuters) were sent there to kill everybody, i don't think they're scared though!. i'm going to have to say by boat because the helicopter couldn't have held all of themWww@Enter-QA@Com

I guess he did do some time traveling!. At least he went through some sort of portal because he was wearing a parka when he woke up in the middle of the Sahara desert!. He had to have been in a cold climate and then was instantly in the Sahara!. (Which makes me kinda wonder where he could have been before the Sahara!. Maybe he was visiting the Polar Bear that was also buried in the desert!?)Www@Enter-QA@Com

I do think that Ben is some how time traveling because he seemed to not be sure where he was when we first see him in the sahara it could have been the magic box but im think more time travel then that and if you noticed the whole morris code thing the people on the boat said what do you mean the doctor is fine so it would appear to me that in their time the doctor is fine but on island time the doctor is already dead so their is some kidn of huge cape in the time that could probably send Ben back and forward and that power can make him very dangerouseWww@Enter-QA@Com
