No, it just sounds better!. Besides Lift can often carry the connotation of movement rather than simply, !.!.!.!. well, elevation!. Oh, and here's this: http://memory-alpha!.org/en/wiki/Turbolif!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
It can go in more than one direction - the idea is that there is a series of tubes running around the Enterprise and the lift can take you all over the ship rather than just up and down! Why they called it a turbo lift rather than elevator I don't know, unless it is a tip of the hat to Isambard Kingdom Brunel who had the idea of a Pneumatic railway!Www@Enter-QA@Com
Well, 'elevator' seems to be an archaic word at that time!. 'Turbolift' although also an archaic word, still sounds futuristic!. Boy, you got too much time on your hands! LOLWww@Enter-QA@Com
I imagine because turbo lift sounds much more high tech and faster and futuristic than elevator!. We've all been in an elevator and they're not exactly very exciting or sci fi are they!?!Www@Enter-QA@Com
American is just a 'slanganised' version of english!!
